Crust Bikes commissioned the production of a 26+ tire because they love the 26+ format and didn't want to stand by and watch it die out. It’s a great tire for singletrack, gravel routes, and picking up speed on pavement. The “+” indicates that the tire typically measures between 2.8 and 3.0 inches in width—a sort of “mid-fat” tire. You can run this tire on a rim with an internal width of around 25 mm; it works beautifully. They set up tubeless with ease, offer plenty of cornering grip, ride wonderfully at low pressures, and simply perform great all around.
Why choose 26+ for your Evasion or Scapegoat (or whatever bike you own that fits them)? Contrary to what the out-of-touch marketing teams at big brands want the masses to believe, 26-inch wheels are by no means dead. The main reason Crust values this format is the smaller outside diameter; this makes it the ideal plus-tire option for riders on smaller (or even larger) frames. The ride feel is less like sitting on a horse, and you have better control over the bike. Plus, it allows for high-volume tires without significantly compromising standover height. Unlike 27.5+ and 29+ versions, a 26+ tire maintains a fairly moderate outside diameter—roughly comparable to a 700x25c tire, which is considered fast.
This keeps the bike extremely agile, unlike large, sluggish wheel-and-tire combinations.
